The MDG Challenge

Name: The MDG Challenge

Description: Inspired by the need to take action on the Millennium Development Goals as set by the UN, this project aims to engage ordinary people to be involved in consciously striving to help reach these goals.

Background

I was re-reading the Millennium Development Goals and realized how much I had forgotten what they meant, to me personally. When I went off to university those many years ago, it was these goals that inspired me to believe in the change that I want to see in the world.

2015 is not too far away but I’ve decided to not just leave it to governments and large organizations to meet this important commitment. Why not? I am challenging myself to get involved in every one of those 8 goals set out and this space is where I will be filing my thoughts. I believe if everyone in the world committed to contributing to these 8 in one form or another, it will inspire a global movement to participate in the shaping of a better world.

I urge you to take up the challenge too!

What are the MDGs anyway?

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. They include eradicating extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS, and developing a global partnership for development.

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

  • Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
  • Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Goal 4: Reduce child mortality rates
  • Goal 5: Improve maternal health
  • Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
  • Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
